FISH OIL supplements are a dime a dozen.

Freshlife, your number one resource for healthy living...and our supplements...

Freshlife Wellness Coaches Kim and Sandy took a road trip to make sure what we offer you at Freshlife is quality, it's the best.

Last week Sandy and I journeyed to Coshocton, OH to attend the Fishing for sandyandkimKnowledge Tour at Wiley’s Finest Alaskan Fish Oil! What a trip! It started out with a 6 hour drive, well..make it 6 1/2 since we stopped for a salad and some gas on the way. By the time we arrived at the hotel in Columbus, I had earned the nick-name “Zippy” for my fast paced driving skills; its always a bit of a thrill for a small town girl to drive in the city.

The next morning after a good workout and a great breakfast including avocado toast, spinach, and a hardboiled egg, we were off to Wiley’s for a day of learning.

We were enchanted with the beautiful little town of Coshocton, and even more enchanted with the Wiley’s Family. For those of you who don’t know, Wiley’s Finest is a family owned and operated business. They are made in America starting with wild caught fish off the icy waters of Alaska. Wild caught Alaskan fish is a big deal because America holds the highest standards and regulations for the fishing industry in the world! Wiley’s takes it a step further by being one of the few fish oil supplements to achieve the Certified Sustainable stamp from the Marine Stewardship Council. They are also National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) certified, another difficult certification to acquire, which ensures an elevated level of third party testing. On the tour we learned that every bottle that ships out of their warehouse has been tested 2-3 times. They are really serious about quality and integrity.

When we first brought in their Elementary EPA product for kids, I didn’t really get why they were adding in Lutein and Zeaxanthin, two antioxidants commonly taken for their ability to prevent age related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of blindness in people over 55. It didn’t seem fitting for a children’s supplement. Most savvy parents I know are supplementing their children’s diet with fish oil to improve cognitive function such as focus and memory, or they are doing it for skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Prevention of blindness isn’t even on their radar, so why the addition? Well, it turns out, AMD is on the rise.

According to the National Eye Institute, the prevalence of AMD is expected to have a 50% increase by 2020. This is in part due to an increase in our aging population, but also to the increased exposure to blue light. This is where our friends at Wiley’s Finest hit the nail on the head!

I should have known they were on to something big. If you’re not familiar with blue light, it is a form of light we are getting at higher levels than previously seen due to the deteriorating ozone layer. Blue light is also emitted from electronic devices; I don’t know about your family, but in my family, we all spend far too much time in front of electronic devices. Both of my children use electronic devices for school, and I do for work. They are an integral part of our life, and because of that, we must be prepared for the consequences. Since we know that blue light is particularly damaging to the macula, it is truly terrifying to think that because of the damage the blue light causes, we have an increased risk of major vision impairments or blindness. There is no cure for AMD, there is only prevention. At my house, we are all now taking Wiley’s Elementary EPA. With an incredibly delicious mango peach flavor, it is an after dinner treat that I know will pay dividends.

Sandy and I learned so much more about the benefits of taking a high quality fish oil supplement, and the research and quality controls that go into every bottle at Wiley’s Finest. I could go on forever on the topic but the fact of the matter is Fish Oil is the number one most highly studied nutritional supplement on the market today. The health benefits are plentiful. We will be happy to share more of what we learned and why we feel that Wiley’s Finest truly makes the finest fish oil. Just ask us next time you stop in! Learning about the science behind Elementary EPA hit home for me, as we have a dear family member who completely lost his eyesight before the age of 50. It is a hardship and a challenge I wish on no one.

With Love,
Kim Watne CHC
