Think globally, eat locally! Enjoy the best of the season

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
Theodore Roosevelt

There is a seasonal splash of color on the Freshlife front porch - the colors red and green from the skins of locally grown apples. With Autumn only a few days away, the local produce has just expanded to include three early varieties of apples: macintosh, macoun and cortland. The apple table has once again been set up to receive the bountiful harvest of delicious apples from the orchard of Joe Haas. Still offering the lowest price in town, you can purchase apples from our front porch by the pound or conveniently pre-bagged in a variety of sizes. Not sure which kind to try? Feel free to mix and match as well. Don’t see your favorite local flavor? Stay tuned for a larger selection as the season progresses.

The well-known cliche, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, turns out to be right. According to Jonny Bowden, “Epidemiological studies have linked the consumption of apples with reduced risk of some cancers, cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes, and osteoporosis.” You can read more about the wonderful health benefits from crunching apples in his book The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth available in our book department.

Enjoy the best of the season! Add an apple to your lunch box, slice one up and serve with a spoonful of Freshlife’s freshly ground peanut butter (choose from one of three varieties on sale now) for a quick after school snack, or tantalize taste buds on a cool Autumn evening with this easy crisp recipe. All the ingredients are available in our grocery aisles if not in your pantry already.

1/2 peck (5 LB) apples
2 cups regular rolled oats
1/2 cup sucanat (sugar cane natural) or maple sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp each ground clove, ginger and nutmeg (more or less to taste)
1/4 cup softened coconut oil

Wash, peel, core and slice apples. Arrange in the bottom of a lightly oiled 9x13 baking dish. Combine the rest of the ingredients in a mixing bowl and sprinkle over apples. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees uncovered until bubbly and slightly browned. Have peaches or pears to use up? Simply substitute for the apples. This makes a delicious breakfast treat as well.

Bon appetit!
