By Ellen Sue Spicer
Brenda Watson has done it again. Her latest book, The Detox Strategy: Vibrant Health in 5 Easy Steps, is a gem. The book tackles the problem of our daily exposure to toxins in our water, air and food, and how these poisons can debilitate even the most diligent, health-conscious individual. However, Brenda has a well-developed program that anyone can adopt to combat the toxins in our modern environment, in our bodies and on the planet, as well. The program is called RENEW, an acronym that stands for:
Reduce the exposure to toxins in the environment.
Eliminate the toxins in your body.
Nourish your cells and systems.
Energize your body, mind and spirit.
Wellness (putting it all together).
Each chapter takes us closer to total wellness, with helpful summaries at the end of each chapter and appendices for additional information.
The author defines detoxification as “the act of supporting your body’s innate detox methods as well as renewing your body in its totality through specific cleansing regimens and attention to diet and exercise.” But even before Watson reaches this point, she exposes the reader to the “perils of pollutants” so we know why everyone needs to detoxify. Most importantly, as Watson notes, by eliminating personal and household products that create toxins in our body, we are also helping to reduce the amount of toxins in our world.
1 cup sea salt
2 cups baking soda
1 cup Epsom salts
2 TBL vegetable glycerin (per bath)
15 drops eucalyptus oil (per bath)
Combine sea salt, baking soda and Epsom salts in a bowl. Stir to blend. Pour ¼ c salt blend into running bath. Add 2 TBL glycerin. After water is drawn, add 15 drops eucalyptus oil and swirl bath water before stepping in. Store salt blend in a glass jar in a cool, dry place.
Her 5-step program is well planned, well documented and easy to follow. As I was about halfway through reading the book, I decided I needed to “get with the program,” so I went for an infra-red treatment, followed by a colonic, and started taking the herbs she recommends. I also began using detox pads on my feet at night and stepped up my exercise program. I am about halfway through the program, and so far, feel no negative side effects. In general, I feel motivated, energized and captivated with the whole idea of detoxification and its ultimate benefits.
There is so much important information in this book, including easy recipes for cleansing the body that I would need five computer-generated pages to list just the highlights. Instead, I will merely echo Brenda Watson’s first sentence in the introduction: “This is the most important book I will write in my career.” For me, this is probably the most important (health) book I have ever reviewed. It is comprehensive, well documented, user-friendly and filled with valuable information. This book is too important not to read. Place it on the top of your summer reading list. Your body will thank you for it!
