Making a difference in the world

The Brigade changed my life and made me think more about how I could apply my skills as an engineer."
Bucknell Brigader Rob Gradoville, who completed work on two aqueducts to bring running water to families in an isolated mountain community.

Twice a year, for over a decade, students from Bucknell University have been changing the lives of people in Nueva Vida, Nicaragua.

Instead of joining the throngs of spring breakers heading to sunny beaches for every manner of debauchery, a band of students known as the Bucknell Brigade spends spring break rolling up their sleeves and honing their carpentry and painting skills.

Because of their efforts, Nueva Vida now has running water, a permanent medical clinic, a worker-owned sewing co-operative, and a women’s health facility that provides exam rooms, a birthing room, a post-partum room, and education on pre- and post -natal care.

These projects have been supported in large part by the Bucknell Brigade’s year-round fundraiser; selling fair trade, shade grown, Nicaraguan coffee.

This Saturday, March 6TH, from 11 am – 5 pm, a contingent of Bucknell Brigade students will be at Freshlife, passing out free samples, sharing their stories, and or course hoping to sell you a bag of this rich and aromatic coffee.

Please stop in this Saturday and make a contribution to their efforts by taking home a bag of fresh-roasted Bucknell Brigade coffee. (Leave the beans whole, or grind your coffee beans in the Freshlife grinder.)

If you’re unable to make Saturday’s event, look for Bucknell Brigade coffee on Freshlife’s shelves year-round.
